FastBloc2 FE USB Update

This article describes the process for updating the FastBloc2 FE to enable the USB port. Prior to attempting to update the firmware, test the FastBloc2 FE as follows:

  1. Attach a test HDD to the FastBloc2 FE (NOTE: DO NOT use a hard drive containing live evidence)
  2. Plug FastBloc2 FE into the FireWire 800 card
  3. Power on the FastBloc2 FE
  4. Observe that the HDD is recognized by Windows
  5. Created several test files on desktop
  6. Copied the newly-created files to the write-blocked HDD
  7. Using the “Safely Remove Hardware” systray icon, remove the FastBloc/HDD
  8. Power down the FastBloc2 FE and remove the cable
  9. Power down the computer and disconnected the HDD
  10. Attach the HDD into an IDE to USB adapter on a separate computer
  11. Verify that the files were not copied to the drive through Windows Explorer
  12. Repeat steps a) through k) using the USB port if USB is already enabled.

If you can use the FastBloc on the USB port, and EnCase recognizes the FastBloc, there is no need to proceed with the update. In the rare event that your FastBloc does not block writes to the drive, contact Guidance Software Technical Services immediately, and discontinue use of the FastBloc.
