How to Create a Barebones Boot Disk

The Barebones boot disk is a specialized boot disk that can be used to perform DOS Drive to Drive acquisitions and Parallel Port acquisitions.

The first step is to download the Barebones boot disk image here, then use the following procedure to create the disk:

  • Open EnCase, and from the Tools menu, select Create Boot Disk.
  • Choose the A drive and click [Next >].

  • Choose the option to Overwrite diskette with a boot floppy base image and specify the path to the downloaded file from step 1. Click [Next >].

  • EnCase will copy the boot image to the floppy. When it is finished, if the EN.EXE is not already present in the right pane of the Copy Files dialog box, right click and choose New.
  • Point EnCase to the path where EN.EXE resides (typically C:\Program Files\EnCase5) and click [Open].

  • Click [Finish]; EnCase will copy the DOS version of EnCase to the boot floppy.

Note: The Barebones boot disk contains a new menu that has options to load Zip disk drivers. These drivers are not included on the boot disk image and will need to be copied to the root of the floppy drive in order to load them. If you wish to use them, please see our article describing where to download the proper drivers. If you do not need Zip disk drivers, then simply choose the menu option not to load the drivers.
